Early details about the hotly-anticipated 2017 Upper Deck Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial release are slowly leaking out and there is little doubt that it will be one of this year’s hottest products once it officially releases in September.
A few months ago, Upper Deck teased some extremely preliminary information along with some images, but some more facts are popping up as the company solicits the tins which will are likely to be available in hobby shops and retail outlets. More information should surface in the near future about configuration for hobby boxes.
Back in the 2009-10 campaign, Upper Deck struck gold with a set focused on the centennial season for the Montreal Canadiens. In addition to a loaded base set that perfectly covered the club’s history to that point, there were some heavily-desired hits coming out of boxes and tins that still perform exceedingly well when offered for sale.
While it is too early to definitively tell if the 2017 Upper Deck Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial product will achieve the same heights on the secondary market, there is certainly a good chance that it does.
Base Set and Parallels
At this point, the design for the base set cards is known, but set will be made up of 200 cards. It should have a mix of 100 current and retired Maple Leafs in the short set, with the possibility of subset cards that cover the franchise’s history in the next 100 short printed base cards. These come once per pack in the 12-pack tins.
As for parallels, there are going to be Blue Maple Leaf Die-Cuts which appear once in every other pack on average.
Autographs and Parallels
One of the lasting legacies that the Canadiens Centennial set has is the insane demand for some of the autograph cards – especially of those that are difficult to find. Maple Leaf Marks (1:48 in tins) will include autographs from current players along with legends like Doug Gilmour, Darryl Sittler, and Wendel Clark. It will be interesting to see how tough it will be to pull ink from current Maple Leafs rookies Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander as all three have been hobby sensations in recent months.
Memorabilia cards will also have a presence in 2017 Upper Deck Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial, but they will be considerably scarcer than the autographs. Maple Leaf Materials (1:158 in tins) will be joined by the much tougher Maple Leaf Materials Duos (1:1,346) and Maple Leaf Materials Trios (1:4,039).
Box Toppers
Each tin will include a Mini Championship Banner which pays tribute to each of the franchise’s Stanley Cup wins going back to the NHL’s first season of 1917-18. They measure 3.25″ x 8.5″.
